What is MCS?
MCS stands for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. It's an independent, government-backed quality assurance scheme that certifies renewable technology installers and products in the UK. Think of it like Gas Safe for heat pumps — it proves the installer has been assessed and meets industry standards for quality and competency.
MCS covers a range of renewable technologies, including:

- Ground source heat pumps

Why MCS certification matters
1. It's required for the £7,500 grant
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme only pays the grant if your installation is carried out by an MCS-certified installer. If you use a non-certified installer, you won't get the £7,500 — full stop. The installer applies for the grant on your behalf as part of the process.
2. Quality assurance
MCS-certified installers have been independently assessed for their technical competency, quality of work, and customer service. They must follow the MCS installation standard (MIS 3005 for heat pumps), which covers everything from system sizing and design to installation and commissioning.
3. Consumer protection
MCS installers must offer a workmanship warranty of at least 2 years, and the products they install must come with manufacturer warranties. If something goes wrong, MCS provides a consumer complaints process — so you're not left high and dry.
4. Proper system sizing
The biggest cause of heat pump underperformance is poor system sizing. MCS-certified installers follow a detailed heat loss calculation process to ensure your heat pump is the right size for your home. An oversized heat pump short-cycles (inefficient and wears out faster); an undersized one can't keep up on cold days. Getting this right is critical, and MCS standards require it.
How to check if an installer is MCS-certified
- Ask them — any reputable installer will mention their MCS certification upfront. If they don't, that's a red flag.

- Check for accreditation logos — MCS-certified installers display the MCS logo on their website, quotes, and vans.
- Verify with HIES or RECC — many MCS installers are also members of consumer protection schemes like HIES (Home Insulation & Energy Systems) or RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code), which provide additional safeguards.
What to look for beyond MCS certification
MCS certification is the baseline — but a great installer will also have:
- Experience with your property type — listed buildings, flats, and off-grid properties need different approaches. Ask about similar installations they've done.
- Manufacturer accreditation — many heat pump brands (Mitsubishi, Vaillant, Daikin, Samsung, Grant) have their own approved installer networks, which means better training and longer warranties.
- Public liability insurance — minimum £2M, ideally £5M.
- Local references — ask for contact details of previous customers in your area.
- A clear quote — the quote should include the heat pump size (kW), model, hot water cylinder, any radiator upgrades, the grant application, and the net cost. Avoid installers who quote without visiting your property or doing a proper heat loss assessment.
